The Paczki are Here! Woodmoor Bakery – Silver Spring

The tradition is that the Tuesday before Lent is a time to indulge or Fatten up before tightening belts and giving up things for Lent, which starts on Ash Wednesday.  It is the Fat Tuesday associated with Mardi Gras and it is the Shrove Tuesday associated with Pancake Suppers or Pancake Day.

This Tuesday, February 28th is also Paczki Day, a Polish tradition of making and eating Paczki the day before Lent starts.

The best place to get Paczki in Silver Spring, is at the Woodmoor Bakery/Pastry Shop in the Woodmoor Shopping Center at Four Corners.  They make the most divine, decadent Paczki anywhere in the area.  They are the filled, rolled in powdered sugar type paczki and they are GOOD.

My advice is to get there early if you want any! – They start making them a few weeks before Paczki Day, so they
should have them NOW!  I’ve been there on Fat Tuesday before Noon and they had only 3 single Paczki left.

Here’s Hoping the Paczki are plentiful, there is no long line and they don’t run out!

Check out reviews of the Bakery and the Paczki at the Woodmoor Pastry Shop.

Pumpkins! – Country Boy Urban Farm Stand in Silver Spring, MD

Country Boy is like a Farm Stand you’d find on a country road in a rural area, but placed in the heart ofCountry Boy in Wheaton/Silver Spring MDbusy Wheaton-Glenmont.  Since 1955 they have been selling fruits, vegetables, flowers, plants, mulch, firewood, Christmas Trees, beer, wine, unusually fresh groceries and McCutcheon’s Products from Frederick Maryland too!

Country Boy is the best place I found to get my Pumpkins this year and at only .49c a pound the least expensive!  There is a HUGE selection and they look better than anywhere I’ve been.

Visit The Silver Spring Pumpkin Patch

The  Annual Pumpkin Patch has a good selection of Pumpkins and some pretty chrysanthmums at Woodside Methodist Church in the Woodside area at the edge of Downtown Silver Spring.

Boy Scout Troop 209 is Montgomery County’s Oldest Boy Scout Troop.  Boy Scout Troop 209 has been in existence since the 1930′s at this same Silver Spring Location.

Buy a pumpkin or some mums and Support  your Local Silver Spring Boy Scout Troop 209.   All proceeds go to the troop’s financial aid fund to make sure that all scouts can participate in the troops many activities and it’s more fun than just picking up a pumpkin at the local grocery store!

Coolest Hair Place in Downtown Silver Spring

Diana - Headlines Downtown Silver Spring
Headlines is one of a handful of businesses that have survived the test of time in Downtown Silver Spring.

Headlines started out as a small hair shop in 1976.  The Shop first occupied a space on the first floor of an old office building on Roeder Road next to the Villa Rosa Restaurant.  Neither the Villa Rosa or the office building are there now – These places were razed for a huge parking lot. I have been going to Headlines since their days in that Roeder Road Office Building.

They have gotten much much better with age.

Headlines has moved twice, first to First Avenue (at the back of Georgian Towers) and then to their “huge state of the art” current location at 8740 Georgia Avenue (the Headlines Hair Salon - Downtown Silver Springfront of Georgian Towers – now re-named The Point)

Headlines is a great, fun place to get your hair done.  It can be a relaxing experience.  Diana Everline (the owner) is my hairdresser.  Headlines is a real independent local family business.  Jim, (Diana’s Ex-husband) runs the administration accounting side of the business and fills in on the phones and at the front desk sometimes.  Jessica (Diana and Jim’s Daughter) is an excellent hair dresser in her own right and has a large following of clients.

Any hairdresser at Headlines is GOOD – They are all well trained and keep up with all the lastest trends.  You can see certificates on the wall from various prestigious hair salon training courses, such as Vidal Sasson.

While waiting for Diana to cut my  hair today, I learned that the lady who had just finished having her hair done by Diana had driven up from South Carolina to have her hair cut!  She had lived in Silver Spring many years ago and had been coming to Headlines even after she moved to New York and still comes after her last move to South Carolina.  I can’t think of a better compliment or testimonial for this great salon!

Best Subs Around Silver Spring – Santucci’s

santucci storeSantucci’s is a little Italian Deli in the Woodmoor Shopping Center on Colesville Road, Four Corners, Maryland.  This place has the best subs ever!  It’s been here as far back as I can remember.  It’s better than Quiznos, Subway, Jerrys or any other “chain” sub place around.  The flavor is homemade, NY italian deli meat, special seasonings, really good italian bread and attention to detail.  They take their subs seriously here and it shows.

The best bet is the italian cold cut sub – IMHO, It is truly out of this world!

Santucci’s also sells ingredients for italian dishes, dry pasta, tomatoes, cherry pepper relish, cookies, biscotti, pre -prepared pasta dinners, meats and cheeses

Inside Santucci's Silver Spring

Two friends of mine, (New York Transplants) to Silver Spring, swear by Santucci’s.
They say that Santucci’s is the closest to an authentic Italian Deli like home.

One friend (from New York) was searching all over the area for ingredients she was always able to buy in New York for her Italian Cooking and finally found them at Santucci’s.  They also have the “correct” lady fingers for an Italian dessert she makes at Christmas.

Another friend visits Santucci’s when he’s feeling homesick for New York.

Kefa Cafe – Silver Spring Neighborhood Coffee Shop

Inside Kefa Cafe - Silver Spring MarylandOne of the funky, warm, cozy independent business’s that has been a fixture in Downtown Silver Spring for over 15 years.  Want to go to a place with the happy vibe?  The sisters who own and work the counter at Kefa Cafe are beloved by the neighborhood.  Kefa Cafe is small, or as we say in the Real Estate Business, Adorable, Cute and Cozy.

This little nook definitely has a neighborhood feel, with photos and flyers on the walls and there are cheery touches everywhere.  There are no couches or Wi-Fi.  The menu is on a few hanging chalkboards and is comprised of hot and iced coffees/lattes

and teas, breakfast sandwiches on croissant or bagel, and lunch soups &
sandwiches  They also have some awesome gelato and pastry trays.

Space 7:10 at Kefa Cafe is an “organic art space exhibiting an evolving mix of Alley Mural outside of Kefa Cafe Silver Springlocal, outsider, visionary and world cultural artwork.

If you go to Kefa Cafe you may run into George Pelecanos, a well known author and producer, who lives just a few blocks away.  Pelecanos rates Kefa Cafe as one of  his favorite spots in Silver Spring.
