They’re HERE! – Paczki at the Woodmoor Bakery

Powdered PazckiTuesday before Lent is a time to indulge or Fatten up before tightening belts and giving up things for Lent, which starts on Ash Wednesday.  It is the Fat Tuesday associated with Mardi Gras and it is the Shrove Tuesday associated with Pancake Suppers or Pancake Day.

This coming Tuesday March 4th, 2014 is also Paczki Day, a Polish tradition of making and
eating Paczki the day before Lent starts.

The best place to get Paczki in Silver Spring, is at the Woodmoor Bakery/Pastry Shop in the Woodmoor Shopping Center at Four Corners.  They make the BEST Paczki anywhere in the area.  They are the filled, rolled in powdered sugar type paczki and they are GOOD.

The Woodmoor Bakery started making them a week ago – so they have them NOW!   I’ve waited until  Fat Tuesday morning to get Paczki and there were only 3 left.   You’ll get the best selection if you go at least a few days before Fat Tuesday and you’ll avoid the lines.

Check out reviews of the Bakery and the Paczki at the Woodmoor Pastry Shop.

Sligo Creek Golf Course – Help Save Sligo Annual Fall Golf Event October 5th

Sligo Golf Course 1st Hole - Silver SpringSligo Creek Golf Course was the original 18 hole course for the Argyle Country Club in the late 1930’s.  The course was designed by Percy Walborn LeDuc (a Silver Spring Resident) in 1937. In the mid 1940’s Argyle Country Club relocated to another area of Silver Spring (out Layhill Road) and the county through MNCPPC took the golf course over as a public course.

When the Capitol Beltway (495) came through Silver Spring in 1964 it sliced the golf course in half.  Check out this cool overlay map of the course as it was laid out in 1937 and what was left after the Beltway went through the property.   Until 2010, the County ran the (now 9 hole) course as a public course.  In 2009 the county wanted to do away with the property as a golf course. There have been proposals of everything from put put golf, recreation center, driving range to plowing it under to use as soccer and ball fields.

The citizens from the surrounding communtiy and beyond do not want this to happen – so we have Preserve Sligo Golf Course. – Save Sligo is a 501C3.
Sligo Creek Golf Course is an oasis of green space, home to many species of wildlife, plants and just plain beautiful in our rather urban “inside the beltway” area of Silver Spring.  Even if you don’t golf – Sligo Golf Course is very worthy of preservation! They are having their Annual Fall Golf Gorgeous Mature Trees - Sligo Golf Course Silver SpringChallenge on October 5th.

Chompie Returns to Downtown Silver Spring!

sharkThe Giant Inflatable Shark that seems to swim right through the Discovery Headquarters Building in Downtown Silver Spring is BACK!

Nick named “Chompie”, the beloved attraction first appeared in 2006 during Shark Week.  The shark was missing until Chompie Returned in 2010 !

Today he is back for Shark Week 2012, the 25th Aniversary of discovery’s first showing of Shark Week in 1987. Shark week – 25 yrs premires on August 12th at 9pm on the Discovery Channel

I saw Chompie today, he’s a little beat up – but as cool as ever!

The best place to view Chompie is from Silver Spring’s Red Line Metro Platform, looking up Colesville Road.  You would be staring right into his huge open mouth.

This is a great attraction to see in Downtown Silver Spring, whether you view Chompie after dark (he’s lit up) or during the day.  Kids love seeing this.  It is definitely worth the drive or a trip on the Metro, if you don’t live nearby

Flags are In for Memorial Day 2012

flagsYesterday Afternoon Soldiers placed more than 200,000 small U.S. Flags on grave markers at ARLINGTON National Cemetary to mark the start of Memorial Day weekend activities.

Since 1948, the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, also known as The Old Guard, has been carrying out this tradition called “Flags In”.

The flags are placed with “military” like precision, one foot and centered in front of each grave marker.  The effect is spectacular and worth the short trip to Arlington Cemetery to see this weekend!

All the flags will be removed after Memorial Day.

Huge Silver Spring Shark will be a NO SHOW this Year

Chompie the Shark Silver SpringIn Silver Spring, we have a summer  attraction that causes a lot of excitment. During Shark Week the Discovery Building has an enormous inflatable shark swimming through it.  It is quite a sight to see in the skyline at the corner of Colesville Road and Georgia Avenue at the heart of Downtown Silver Spring.  The Shark has been nicknamed “Chompie”.

I heard a rumor on Twitter today, which was confirmed by Silver Spring Patch, that Silver Spring’s Jaws will not be in the sky this summer.

Apparently Chompie is going to be given a rest this year, but the big shark will be back in all it’s glory, for next year’s 25th Anniversary Celebration of Shark Week.
